Start with the mechanism, not the cover
The frame and mechanism decide whether a sofa bed survives two years of daily use. Ask the factory which mechanism is fitted: a click-clack, a pull-out with a metal mesh base, or a lift-up storage mechanism. Each has a different price band and a different failure mode.
Quality checkpoints
- Mechanism cycle test - a good mechanism should open and close 5,000 times without play in the hinge.
- Mattress thickness - under 10 cm feels like a camp bed. 12 to 14 cm is the retail sweet spot.
- Frame timber - kiln-dried hardwood or plywood, not particle board. Ask for the moisture content.
- Feet and floor protection - plastic glides scratch laminate floors and drive returns.
What sells in each market
Northern Europe prefers a firm mattress and a compact footprint. The Middle East favours larger two and three seaters with storage. North America asks for easy assembly and a clear weight rating. Stock accordingly rather than shipping one spec everywhere.
Packaging matters more than you think
A sofa bed ships flat but heavy. Insist on a five-layer carton with edge protectors and a moisture barrier; corner damage is the single most common claim on this product.
